11. Trainspotting - The Baby On The Ceiling

Danny Boyle's Trainspotting is one of the greatest British films of the 1990s, and it's filled with stunning scenes. So, what's its greatest segment? Well, that's arguably Renton's detox, which is one of the most terrifying scenes in a non-horror movie ever. After nearly dying of a heroin overdose, Renton (Ewan McGregor) is locked in his bedroom and forced to go cold turkey, during which he experiences many nightmarish hallucinations, worst of all... the baby on the ceiling.

Renton sees a baby girl crawling across the ceiling and crying, before coming to stop above him. Her head then twists 180 degrees, Exorcist-style, and she falls down towards Renton, who's screaming the entire time. Danny Boyle's magnificent directing and the best acting of Ewan McGregor's career combine to make this a scene that's painfully difficult to watch, not least because of what it represents. 

The baby that Renton sees is actually Dawn, who was the child of his friend Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller). The baby earlier died due to her parents being neglectful junkies, so this hallucination hammers home the destructive effects of Renton's druggie lifestyle in the most harrowing possible way. Still, at least he managed to get clean in the end.
