Not content with appearing in two of the biggest fantasy franchises in history with appearances Harry Potter and Star Wars movies, Warwick Davis went for the hat-trick when he met with Peter Jackson to audition for the role of Gimli in early 1999. When the director outlined his approach to use camera trickery to portray the hobbits onscreen, Davis gave a typically good-natured response, saying "there wasn't the range of short actors to fill the roles, and I joked with him about being lynched by a lot of little people." Despite not getting the role, Davis has only gone on to become a bigger star in the decade since, with a constant stream of film and television work both for himself and others through his Willow Management talent agency. Interestingly, after failing to secure the part of Gimli it was Davis who let slip that Timothy Spall had been cast in the role instead, although that eventually turned out to be another false rumour.
