11. Still Alice

The Plot: Alice Howland (Julianne Moore, who won an Oscar for the role) is a University professor who one day receives a nightmare diagnosis: she has the extremely rare early-onset Alzheimer€™s disease. With her workaholic husband John (Alec Baldwin) and three children (Kristen Stewart, Hunter Parrish, Kate Bosworth), Alice must try to find a way to deal with an illness on an unstoppable path to erase who she is. Why It's Awesome: Though Still Alice is directed without much fuss, that's just as well, because it allows Moore's performance to take center stage unimpeded by flashy gimmicks. The veteran actress delivers a deeply sympathetic performance as a woman swimming against an impossible tide, and the supporting cast is excellent in its own way, especially Stewart, who shares a special bond with her mother as the youngest of the clan. Don't expect any happy endings, but Still Alice is a tender examination of the anguish of Alzheimer's, regardless of the patient's age. How To Watch It: On DVD May 12 (US) / In limited cinemas now (UK)
