20. The Lobster
The Plot: In a dystopian future, single people are given 45 days to find a partner, or are turned into an animal of their choice and released into the nearby forest. Why It's Awesome: Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth, Alps) has concocted a terrifically twisted premise for his latest effort, and the execution is similarly superb, a dark satire of the premium society places on romantic relationships and our behaviours to that end. The cast is stupid-good, including Colin Farrell, Ben Whishaw, John C. Reilly, Olivia Colman, Michael Smiley and Lea Seydoux, and Lanthimos puts them to good use with his ferociously inventive, sinister and hilarious package that won't be for everyone, but is nothing if not absolutely unique.
