12. Cure

When it comes to the wonderful world of Japanese horror, there are a lot of underseen works. Some horror fans will have seen the really high-profile ones, such as Ring or Ju-On, but many of the others languish in cult film circles, with true fame eluding them. Having said this, few are more overdue of recognition that Cure. This horror-thriller is greatly admired by those who've seen it, but that's unfortunately a fairly small number. 

This exemplary horror flick is a psychological horror in every sense. It plays with your mind, burrows its way into your brain and despite starting out fairly gentle, it really sneaks up on you and by the end it'll have terrified you senseless. It's also noteworthy for its extremely frightening villain, one who's scary precisely because of how normal they seem right up until they flick the switch. 

Additionally, it's got terrific acting by the entire cast and the direction from J-horror legend Kiyoshi Kurosawa (no relation to Akira) is characteristically stunning and drenched in atmosphere. Hands down, this is one of the best horror movies that you've probably never seen and it's high time more people discovered its sinister, uniquely discomforting delights.
