10. Perfect Blue

The world of Japanese animation is an intoxicating and beautiful rabbit hole that's well worth voyaging into. Inevitably, the main ones that get mainstream exposure are those by Studio Ghibli and that's fine - as Studio Ghibli are absolutely GOATed - but there's a lot more to this industry than just one studio. 

Here's a more obscure one you absolutely cannot afford to miss, and that's Perfect Blue, directed by the late, great Satashi Kon, who directed only four feature films before dying tragically young at the age of 46. Not only is Perfect Blue a fantastic psychological thriller in general, it's a stirring tribute to what animation can really do. 

For far too long, animation has been dismissed as being purely for family cinema and there aren't nearly enough animations for older audiences, especially when it comes to Western animation. How refreshing it is, then, to see such a mature, complex and ambitious work that brilliantly uses the medium of animation to tell a twisty, visually stunning and frequently effed-up psychological horror story that most definitely isn't for kids. In fact, it's rated 18 in the UK. 

Perfect Blue is a confusing one that you won't necessarily understand, but you'll most definitely feel it and you'll be floored. Don't sleep on this one.
