6. Galaxy Quest

Galaxy Quest, which spoofs Star Trek, is another one of those movies that's loved by those who have seen it, but it's never reached the widest audience. This one is pretty much the perfect parody, and that's not said lightly. 

It is the best antidote to... well, let's be real here, most spoofs out there. First up, it's actually, you know, funny. Very funny in fact, with many of the biggest laughs courtesy of the late, great, forever-missed Alan Rickman, who's hysterical as the Spock-esque character. Secondly, while most parodies just throw around loads of meaningless jokes and forget about a plot, Galaxy Quest actually has a strong story and clearly defined characters that go through heart-warming arcs. 

And finally, it comes from a place of the deepest respect and sincerity. It is clear as day that the people who made this adore Star Trek with all their hearts. Unlike with, say, DreamWorks' Shrek, a (dare I say it?) criminally overrated parody that crassly mocks with Disney with a snarky, almost nihilistic streak, Galaxy Quest is affectionate and respectful. Factor in the strong cast, gloriously silly action scenes and a plot so original and clever others will be jealous they didn't come up with it first and you've got one of the best comedies of the 90s, one which deserves to be far more than just a cult classic.
