He's back with a decidedly more accessible second feature now - a trippy sci-fi horror film in which an astronaut (Eiza González) wakes up aboard a research station on a barren planet with the rest of her crew dead. Aaron Paul co-stars as a man who may or may not have been sent to rescue her.

While it's fair to say that Ash is very clearly indebted to numerous classic sci-fi horror flicks like The Thing and Alien, it's perhaps better thought of as a love letter to those unassailable masterworks.

Flying Lotus imbues the film with a ton of neon-splashed style that feels very much his own, while mining the paranoia-laced scenario for every drop courtesy of fine performances from González and Paul.

Above all else Ash proves that striking vibes and a strong cast can make a relatively ordinary story feel anew once again.
