8. Donkey Kong - War For The Planet Of The Apes

Another case of an Easter egg hiding in plain sight is the presence of the so-called "donkeys" in War for the Planet of the Apes. The Colonel's (Woody Harrelson) army has taken in traitorous apes which they use to perform menial grunt tasks and humiliatingly label as "donkeys".

Donkeys...apes. This is clearly a reference to Donkey Kong, made no more evident than by the fact that the main donkey, Red, is himself a gorilla, resembling both King Kong and, yes, Donkey Kong.

Presumably Matt Reeves didn't have the donkeys be labelled "Donkey Kong" outright either because it'd be too on-the-nose, or Nintendo's lawyers might've had a few words to say.
