After the ludicrously brilliant first movie (its still the legitimately best MCU movie), director James Gunn had quite the task on his hands to follow it up. And while it lacks something of the freshness of the original, Gunn can be very proud of what he achieved.

The film is hilarious and action-packed in a way that escalates the first film's plot, but more crucially, it dials up the heart even more, delivering on the promise of Star-Lord's compelling Daddy issues with a devastating climax that is unquestionably the most depressing but heart-felt moments in any comic book movie.

There's the right blend of spectacle and personal stakes, and while there's some patchy effects work, the film absolutely delivers on the need to be everything the original was and more. It's sillier, it's funnier and it makes you care more for all of the characters.

And that opening sequence with dancing Baby Groot is an absolute joy that is set to be a meme for years.
