19. A War

Calling upon the successful formula that worked so well for in his prior movies, R and A Hijacking, Danish director Tobias Lindholm reunites again with actor Pilou Asbaek (who also recently joined the cast of Game of Thrones) for his latest feature A War.

Blending elements of frontline thriller and courtroom drama, the movie features Asbaek as a Danish army commander serving in Afghanistan’s war-torn Helmand Province, who makes a split-second decision that results in the deaths of several innocent civilians and must face the consequences of his actions at a war tribunal back home in Copenhagen. A fascinating exploration of the moral ambiguity of modern warfare, A War offers a refreshingly non-American perspective on recent conflicts in the Middle East in its focus on the consequences of war rather than whether that war was just or not.
