Director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland originally planned a much different finale for their totally-not-a-zombie thriller, as you can see from the alternate ending in the special features for 28 Days Later. Things could've been even more different, however, as if you highlight the Main Menu button on that page and hit right, you'll access the storyboards for the "radical" alternate ending.
