20 Best Horror Movies Of 2021

10. Werewolves Within

Why would you have anything but basement-low expectations for any movie adapted from a video game? Especially when it's a VR game few people have even heard of, and directed by a little-known filmmaker in Josh Ruben (Scare Me) no less.

But lo and behold, Werewolves Within - based on the 2016 Ubisoft VR game of the same name - turned out to be arguably the greatest video game movie ever made, and certainly the best-reviewed.

Skillfully, claustrophobically directed by Ruben while gamely performed by its cast - especially leads Sam Richardson and Milana Vayntrub - this is a fun, twisty horror-comedy that builds a genuine mystery about the identify of the werewolf terrifying the sleepy town of Beaverfield that delivers a satisfyingly left-field payoff.

Though the werewolf genre feels pretty played-out these days, Werewolves Within breathes unexpected new life into it by compensating for its low budget with charm and attitude.
