3. Roma
Alfonso Cuarón's new film couldn't be more different from his last one, Gravity, with its literally and figuratively grounded approach to human drama, lack of spectacular visual effects and deeply personal story.
Roma is the work of a true master craftsman in full control of their vision: Cuarón tells a relatively simple story of the day-to-day travails of a maid (a brilliant Yalitza Aparicio) in 1970s Mexico City, yet one fleshed out by its rich historical context, fantastic performances and Cuarón's eye-watering cinematography.
Devastatingly human in every fibre of its being, Roma tells a universal story of yearning, loss and family albeit from a more marginalised perspective, the results of which have rightly cemented it as a sure-fire Oscar front-runner.
