13. Thunder Road

One of the year's most evocative feature debuts, Thunder Road sees Jim Cummings taking triple duty as writer-director-actor in this searing drama about a police officer (Cummings) unravelling following the death of his mother.

Loaded with fantastic long takes while serving as a rich character study of one man trying to keep his fraught life from completely falling apart, Thunder Road balances its light and dark elements exceptionally well, delivering an unexpectedly affecting effort in the process.

Delightfully awkward and at times both frightening and thigh-slappingly funny, this is a largely unsung indie which absolutely deserves your attention, and earmarks Cummings as a major talent.
