5. Call Me By Your Name – Mr Perlman’s Monologue

A touching tale of first love, director Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me by Your Name was an instant hit with critics in 2017. Set in northern Italy in the early 80s, the coming-of-age drama chronicles the romance between 17-year-old Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet) and his professor father’s American assistant Oliver (Artie Hammer) over the course of a long, hot summer.

But all good things must come to an end and as the summer reaches its conclusion so does Elio and Oliver’s relationship as the latter returns to America leaving Elio heartbroken but bringing us to one of the film’s most moving moments.

Throughout the film, Elio thought he and Oliver’s relationship was a torrid secret but it turns out his father Mr Perlman (Michael Stuhlbarg) has not only known all along but encouraged their love to blossom too which comes to light in a touching monologue in which the father lets his son know he was wholly accepting of their romance and to cherish what the two shared.

Sensitively delivered by Stuhlbarg, it’s a bittersweet moment and one of 2017’s most powerful.
