It's pretty embarrassing that it's taken until 2018 for a major Hollywood studio to release a movie focused entirely on the travails of a gay teenager, but at least it's finally happened.
As a tale of self-discovery, a cute romance and a breezily enjoyable hangout movie, it nimbly switches gears between serious intent and goofy comedy, allowing it to sit snugly among the classics of the genre. Those John Hughes comparisons are certainly well-earned.
