Netflix's empire continues to grow.
There's no denying that 2017 was a banner year for Netflix: the streaming platform released more than 50 feature dramas, comedies and documentaries under their Originals banner over the last year, and that number is only set to increase over the next 12 months.
Though there's been a previous scepticism about Netflix's ability to deliver quality Originals that people actually want to see, 2017 saw the release of more acclaimed original content than ever before, with some of the year's best documentaries and most entertaining lower-budget genre films landing day-and-date on Netflix.
Sure, not everything was a rousing success: Death Note was thoroughly underwhelming and Netflix's first blockbuster Bright was critically panned (yet streamed more than 10 million times in its release weekend), but it's hard to deny that the streaming giant offered more quality, curated original content this year than it ever has.
Even as the spectre of net neutrality looms, Netflix is becoming an increasingly convincing supplement - if not an outright alternative - to the movie-going experience, and expect 2018 to only further bolster that fact...
20. The Babysitter
It's fair to say that expectations were never going to be high where a McG-directed movie is concerned, but you know what? Thanks to Netflix's hands-off approach to their filmmakers combined with a knowingly goofy script, a fun cast and lashings of gore, The Babysitter is a gonzo little horror-comedy well worth your time.
Touting sharp visuals, a script well-versed in pop-culture and a snappy 85-minute run-time, it's a movie that knows exactly what it is and delivers accordingly.
Especially note-worthy is Samara Weaving, who between appearing in this as the titular character, as well as indie thriller Mayhem and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, has had one hell of a 2017.
