6. Gerald's Game

Netflix

Arguably one of the best-ever Stephen King adaptations and an undeniable improvement on the source material, Gerald's Game is a must-see for horror fans, a wildly entertaining, stomach-knottingly tense film about a woman (Carla Gugino) desperately trying to free herself from her bed after a kinky sex game goes wrong.

Gugino gives one of the year's most under-appreciated performances - easily her best to date - while Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Hush) directs the hell out of the largely single-location scenario, refusing to flinch away from the stomach-churning nature of King's novel.

A major credit to Netflix's cachet of quality genre films, Gerald's Game proves that Netflix can be a warm home for those King adaptations that are a little too niche and risky for a theatrical release.
