Alive is one of the most famous and striking survival dramas ever put to film. Released in 1993, the film details the trials and tribulations of the survivors of Ugandan Air Force Flight 571 after it crash lands in the Andes. Based on the compelling and heartbreaking true story, Alive manages to be both bleak - looking at what the men had to do to survive - and hopeful, as they continue to fight for safety.

This is a survival film which looks at the harshest aspects of what man would do in order to survive. The fact that it's based on a true story makes it all the more harrowing. As the survivors begin to starve, the resort to eating the flesh of their dead friends to keep alive. Amongst this, they also attempt to make contact with civilisation, brave freezing weather, and hold up against an avalanche.

It's a relentless thriller packed with a great ensemble cast - Ethan Hawke, Ele Keats, Josh Lucas, Bruce Ramsay and Josh Hamilton - and some devastating moments of peril and tragedy. But it's one hell of a ride.
