20. A Dark, Brooding Superman Movie...Nobody Wanted (Man Of Steel)

The DCEU kicked off with Man of Steel, which sought to radically reinvent the typical conception of a Superman movie. While the iconic Christopher Reeve films were largely colourful and hopeful, Zack Snyder instead drew inspiration from Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight saga, transposing that gritty, dark style onto Superman.

Fan response was incredibly mixed as a result, with many deeming the washed-out aesthetic and mopey superhero as too far a leap from what fans both wanted and expected.

Batman v Superman had Supes being even more of a charmless sad sack, so hopefully the lighter tone of Justice League will realign the character's mood a little.
