Intriguingly the Longbottom surname found its genesis in J.R.R Tolkiens Lord of the Rings trilogy. In Tolkiens richly detailed Middle Earth, Longbottom is a region of the Shire responsible for growing the best pipe-weed money can buy. Thus Longbottom is both the name of this region renowned for growing plants and the surname of the boy with a penchant for magical gardening. This cannot be dismissed as a coincidence J.K Rowling is known for filling her writing with Easter Eggs like this.
