One of more exciting but peculiar easter eggs in Spider-Man 3 occurs when we pan along a workbench in Harry Osborne's lab, where we see a number of masks, including the familiar green and yellow Green Goblin mask, but more curiously, the silver and gold Hobgoblin mask from the comics. What makes this so strange is that, prior to the release of Spider-Man 3, it was widely believed that Harry would become the Hobgoblin, but instead, Sam Raimi and co. (perhaps under pressure from Sony) decided to just have Harry become Green Goblin Mark 2, which seems like a massive wasted opportunity. More to the point, they don't just recycle Green Goblin, but tease us with the Hobgoblin mask: why go to all the effort of creating the mask if it's not even going to be featured in the movie? It's an easter egg that happens to be cool and totally infuriating at the same time.
