8. Guillermo del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness

Guillermo del Toro arguably has more unrealised projects under his belt than any other filmmaker alive, and exploring them could take another list or two. 

For this list, though, we're focussing on the most tantalising of all del Toro's unmade visions: his adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft's cosmic horror short story At the Mountains of Madness, a bleak and thrilling tale of an Arctic exploration that leads to the discovery of lost and ancient civilisation. 

With its stunning set pieces and stylish visions of horror and monsters, Lovecraft's classic novella seemed a match made in heaven for del Toro's unique blend of fantasy and surrealism, but funding the project proved difficult. 

Despite del Toro's love for the source material and various attempts to make the project a reality with stars such as Ron Perlman and Tom Cruise, it seems we may never get an At the Mountains of Madness adaptation of all, leaving this perhaps the greatest del Toro movie never made. Damn.
