As we all know, there is obviously a lot to deal with in the world right now. Many of us have a go to hobby or activity as a bit of escapism from our worries – whether it’s exercise, reading, art, music etc. And for any cinema enthusiast, it could be just watching a beloved film of theirs that makes all the difference. In fact, even if you’re not a movie-lover, you probably have at least one that you go to for a bit of light relief. 20. Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

An indie film about a family full of oddballs who are on a cross-country journey to get their daughter to a pageant was a risky project if not produced carefully but the clever script writing of Michael Arnt, a perfect balance of two entirely different genres and the brilliant cast all intertwines seamlessly to produce a bitter-sweet road trip comedy.

The acting is stellar – Toni Collette is wonderful as the maternal one of the bunch, Steve Carell proves that he can do serious roles as well as comical but it’s young Abigail Breslin who steals the show. Her character totally epitomises a sense of childlike innocence with her ambitious goals of winning the pageant. It all adds up to convey a realistic and relatable family, despite their colourful quirks.

Little Miss Sunshine is emotional, thought-provoking and utterly hysterical. The ending is largely poignant but also leaves you feeling uplifted too, as if you’ve been on the exact same road trip with the Hoover family.
