20 Films To Watch If You Love Halloween But Hate Horror

7. Shaun Of The Dead (2004)

The first of Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy and arguably the best, Shaun of the Dead is a horror-comedy which makes fun of the zombie genre whilst fully embracing it too. The storyline is simple – a regular man with a hum-drum life is suddenly interrupted by a surprise zombie apocalypse. It swiftly becomes a mission of saving his best friend, girlfriend, mother and the local pub.

It’s very laid-back in its pacing but still has a sense of tension with a serious end-goal of surviving the zombie takeover.

It’s not just a cheap slapstick horror either. Shaun of the Dead is surprisingly clever in how it uses foreshadowing for the upcoming events – Ed's pub-crawl plan neatly setting up many of the film's key plot beats.

Additionally, the entire storyline works as a commentary on modern civilisation and our tendency to go through the motions of life mindlessly, much like zombies.

It’s smart, thrilling and one of the finest British comedies ever made.
