Its taken a long time for Guillermo del Toro to get where he is today, but they didnt just allow some rotund Mexican guy to direct bizarre multi-million dollar films like Hellboy and Pacific Rim for the fun of it. Even before he broke through artistically with Pans Labyrinth, the director had been working for a good twenty years on smaller, lesser-known films. Spanish-language vampire flick Cronos lead the way for del Toros Hollywood debut, which had more than a bit of the imaginative, creepy, utterly horrifying fare he does today (doesnt Crimson Peak look great?). Mimic is actually more sci-fi than it is horror, a sinister little monster movie with scientists getting picked off by terrifying creatures. Creatures who began life as genetically-engineered cockroach killers, but have since learned to mimic human beings so as to survive and hunt their new prey. Which is people. Its a little rough around the edges and del Toro bemoans not getting to do the final cut to this day, but its a really odd, genuinely frightening film starring Josh Brolin and F Murray Abraham.
