Oculus was one of the genre surprises of 2014, and it made the very prospect of staring into a mirror terrifying. This time around, Mike Flanagan, the director and co-writer of Oculus, has found a new fervent ground of mundane activities to tackle. Enter Somnia, the director's look at what happens when an orphaned childs dreams take on a wicked reality for the adults around him. And with a cast that includes Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane and Annabeth Gish, there is likely more going on here than its unassuming synopsis would imply. The film has been rated PG-13 in the U.S. for violent content and terror including disturbing images. Some horror fans may be disappointed to hear of the family-friendly rating, though if Somnia carries on in the spirit of Flanagans existing work it will be more about atmosphere and suspense rather than graphic, grisly content.
