The Bruce Banner/Hulk character has encountered so many changes over the years that it's a relief to simply see one that appears to have struck a chord with audiences. Eric Bana gave a solid, even underrated performance in 2003's Ang Lee-directed Hulk, while the film itself was a bit of a mixed bag. 2008's The Incredible Hulk fared better, and despite Edward Norton's acclaimed performance, the actor was not asked back for The Avengers, apparently because of his dictatorial attitude on set. Mark Ruffalo snagged the role for The Avengers, and his performance combined with Joss Whedon's screenplay and some incredible visual effects resulted in easily the greatest screen interpretation of the character to date. What truly makes this portrayal work is that it mates the Hulk's sheer, destructive power with plenty of hilarious moments (namely punching Thor out of nowhere and rag-dolling Loki) while not ignoring the human side of the equation. Ruffalo's restrained performance finally got the big green guy to where he needed to be, even if a standalone Hulk film isn't looking likely in the future. All things considered, though, that might be for the best, as the Hulk clearly works best in smaller doses anyway. Roll on Avengers: Age of Ultron...
