3. Digger

Digger is the new film from Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant) and one of the most enigmatic films of the year. 

This apparently Dr. Strangelove-esque black comedy stars Tom Cruise as Digger Rockwell, the "most powerful man in the world" who sets off to prove himself humanity's saviour by stopping a catastrophe he set in motion.

With Cruise having spent so long away from the dramatic arena with his high-wire blockbusters like Mission: Impossible and Top Gun: Maverick, it sure is a treat to see him finally stretching himself again with a role that's already widely expected to be a serious contender for next year's Best Actor Oscar.

Though the teaser trailer doesn't give much away, Cruise will reportedly undergo a Les Grossman-esque transformation for the part with extensive prosthetics while rocking a thick Southern accent. Cruise is also joined by one hell of an incredible ensemble cast, including Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Emma D'Arcy, and Burn Gorman.

Test screening reports have called Digger ambitious and challenging, so expect it to be one of the year's most talked-about movies.

Digger releases on October 2.
