James Gunn makes a surprising leap from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the world of the DC Extended Universe with this quasi-sequel to 2016's commercially successful but critically-maligned Suicide Squad.

Armed with an R-rating and an outstanding ensemble cast - including but not limited to Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Peter Capaldi - it is a film that effortlessly sells itself on paper.

The marketing so far suggests that Gunn will bring both his irreverent sense of humour and unique visual style to the table, for what's hopefully a more coherent and character-driven follow-up to the troubled original.

Warner Bros. must be confident in it, given that a spin-off TV series starring John Cena's anti-hero Peacemaker has already wrapped shooting.

The Suicide Squad begins its international rollout on July 30.
