20 Most Controversial Horror Movie Scenes Of All Time

6. Night of the Living Dead - Ben Is Shot (1968)

The only film with the distinction of being mentioned twice in this list, The Night of The Living Dead was not just a very scary horror film, it also raised many sociological issues too. Race was a very sensitive issue back in the 1960s with Civil Rights Marches, Martin Luther King, widespread rioting. Hollywood did not portray black heroes (well okay, there was token Sidney Poitier). Romero cast a black actor in the role of Ben - the only person who seems to have any sensible ideas what to do. This was very pioneering of Romero in the 60s. Ben is the only character to survive the Actual night of the living dead. He wakes up to find the National Guard have arrived and he makes a move to go out and join them. Unfortunately the guard think he is a zombie and shoot him between the eyes. The end credits show his body burning on a pyre of corpses. There's your controversial scene - the hero is killed.
