It goes without saying that it is hard for any sequel to beat the first movie, but Raimi managed to top his first Spider-Man film with this fan-favourite effort.

It had a great story behind it, and Doctor Octopus was a villain whose tragic transformation towards villainy was entirely understandable, with no awful Mr Freeze style trade-down.

It's just a shame that the franchise was squandered by the final movie.
