20 Most Disturbing Japanese Horror Movies Of All Time

By Jack Pooley /

18. Tokyo Gore Police (2008)

The Plot: In near-future Japan, a virus mutates humans into creatures known as Engineers, who form grotesque and bizarre "enhancements" from their wounds, namely bio-organic weaponry, while a force of Engineer hunters try to rid the world of these mutants once and for all. Why It's Disturbing: Yoshihiro Nishimura's imagination appears to know no bounds if Tokyo Gore Police is any indication, as this is easily one of the most inventive gore-fests of the last decade, and though difficult to take even remotely seriously, isn't much less disturbing as a result. The mind-blowingly inventive effects work is what makes this one so memorable: one Engineer sprouts a three-foot long cannon for a penis, another is a woman with an alligator's maw where her legs should be, there's an amputee with blades for limbs, and even a guy who has his own hand launcher (yes, a rocket launcher-type weapon which fires severed hands). Though one of the more "fun" movies on this list, it still boasts its fair share of nauseating violence and skin-crawling body horror, and isn't to be missed.
