14. Dance Party (Ex Machina)

Ex Machina may be a science-fiction film, but it€™s apparent how it also functions as a psychological thriller. Nearly the whole movie feels like an ominous set-up to something terrible happening, largely because it feels like you can€™t trust any of the main characters. With the tension reaching an all-time high with Caleb caught in Nathan€™s room, it feels like it€™s time to brace for the worst, but instead there€™s a dance party?! Oscar Isaac€™s brilliantly choreographed dance to €œGet Down Saturday Night€ breathes some levity into the film, while simultaneously rendering him an even more enigmatic persona in Caleb€™s eyes. He€™s maintaining a facade and avoiding Caleb€™s questions, but doing so in such a ridiculously evasive way that it€™s both fun to watch and meaningful to the characters involved. The whole scene plays so well against the haunting atmosphere of the film and gives the viewer a much needed chance to relax, making its jovial nature stand out as being chillingly important.
