Ex Machina may be a science-fiction film, but its apparent how it also functions as a psychological thriller. Nearly the whole movie feels like an ominous set-up to something terrible happening, largely because it feels like you cant trust any of the main characters. With the tension reaching an all-time high with Caleb caught in Nathans room, it feels like its time to brace for the worst, but instead theres a dance party?! Oscar Isaacs brilliantly choreographed dance to Get Down Saturday Night breathes some levity into the film, while simultaneously rendering him an even more enigmatic persona in Calebs eyes. Hes maintaining a facade and avoiding Calebs questions, but doing so in such a ridiculously evasive way that its both fun to watch and meaningful to the characters involved. The whole scene plays so well against the haunting atmosphere of the film and gives the viewer a much needed chance to relax, making its jovial nature stand out as being chillingly important.
