Even if you've never seen From Here to Eternity, you're probably familiar with the iconic image of Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr locking lips on a Hawaii beach.

Outside of that visual, though, this is a stirring wartime melodrama with a bevy of outstanding performances, perhaps best of all Montgomery Clift as the doomed, haunted Private Prewitt.

Unlike the aforementioned Mrs. Miniver, the screenplay has enough moral and emotional complexity that it doesn't feel overtly like propaganda, to the extent that the U.S. Army vocally condemned the film's less-than-harmonious depiction of its soldiers.

It could certainly be more nuanced to provide a stronger emotional punch, but for the most part it's a solidly enjoyable drama.
