3. Weapons - That Insane Climax

With Weapons, a Rashomon-style horror mystery concerning the disappearance of most of the children from a particular elementary school class, it was all riding on the denouement and whether or not writer-director Zack Cregger could pull together a satisfying finale. To say he succeeded in this would be a gross understatement.

Weapons is consistently incredible throughout yet it peaks at the very end, cleverly weaving all of its dangling plot threads together and paying them off with a violent, unbearably suspenseful climax in which the villainous witch Aunt Gladys (Amy Madigan) uses her powers of possession to try and kill the main characters.

The sequence tightens like a first around a throat, getting more and more intense until the story reaches its flawless ending - young Alex (Cary Christopher), whose classmates disappeared, uses Gladys' magic against her and sends the possessed children running after her in a darkly hilarious, already-iconic sequence that was even parodied at the recent Oscars. The kids then proceed to literally rip Gladys apart.

This is most certainly poetic justice, as the vile witch is destroyed by her own magic being used against her, yet this triumphant defeat is juxtaposed with melancholy as all of Gladys' victims fall into catatonia, from which some of them are implied to never have recovered. This is an emotionally truthful way to end the tale - even after an evil force is destroyed, the devastation they've inflicted doesn't go away.
