19. Lotso Almost Gets Woody Incinerated €“ Toy Story 3

Sometime toward the end of Toy Story 3, Woody learns the true nature of Sunnyside Daycare €“ it€™s a perpetual hell for toys ran as a dictatorship by a plush bear named Lotso. All of Andy€™s toys are under the cosh at the present time, with the exception of Buzz, who has been hilariously brainwashed. So Woody does what any noble protagonist would do €“ he helps the toys to escape. Now, I know Lotso€™s a bit of a control freak, but his response to this must surely be considered a bit of an overreaction. After torturing (seriously, there€™s offscreen torture in this family film) the phone toy, he ambushes Woody€™s group by the bins and proceeds to throw them all in so they end up in the landfill, and eventually the childhood-ruining furnace. Now, I know it goes wrong for Lotso as well, but he still managed to fulfil his end of the plan in a roundabout fashion, and the toys very nearly end up melted if it wasn€™t for the aliens and their claw. Now, the only thing Woody€™s gang did was attempt to escape €“ a punishment which usually earns a toy a stint in the box. That€™s bad enough in itself, but Lotso€™s decision to throw a whole bevy of toys into their equivalent of hell for a complex escape attempt is so ridiculously evil and over-the-top, especially after you€™ve seen that punishments for similar escapes just involved time in the box. Why condemn them to a flame-filled existence when you desperately need toys for the young kids€™ room? After all, you can€™t be a dictator if you keep banished your subjects.
