2014's Annabelle scored just 29% with critics, so while it wasn't likely that this sequel would score lower, it more-than-doubling the original movie's rating was pretty damn unexpected.

You can thank director David F. Sanberg for this one, whose previous film Lights Outs rocked an even higher 76%. Sandberg knows his way around a camera and how to stage tense, visually dynamic set-pieces, even if the movie's plot and reliance on jump scares still adhere to pure genre formula.

The solid acting, especially from the young cast, and a few nifty twists help make the prospect of a third Annabelle film seem not totally depressing, and prove how enjoyable even familiar material can be in the right hands.
