Though it was always likely that this movie based on the making of Tommy Wiseau's The Room would score at least mixed-positive reviews on the basis of its sheer weirdness, few could've expected that James Franco, who hadn't even directed a single critically-praised movie prior to this, could actually deliver one of the year's best-reviewed films.

Would it have surprised anyone if Franco delivered a 53% movie here? Instead, rather than quickly cranking out yet another low-effort drama without any directorial flair whatsoever, Franco slowed down, took his time, and created one of the most hilarious and unexpectedly heartfelt films about filmmaking in quite some time.
