Six months ago, this George Clooney-directed suburban satire, co-written by the Coen Brothers of all people, seemed like a sure Oscar contender. Then people saw it.

Though Clooney's previous directorial effort, The Monuments Men, scored just 30%, that seemed like a fluke rather than any indication of a trend.

Sadly, though, Suburbicon fails to make the most of a game Matt Damon performance, serving up a badly-paced, tonally off-kilter, surprisingly simplistic black comedy farce that makes so many wrong creative calls.

If Clooney's next movie is another dud, his future as a prestige filmmaker may be very much in doubt.
