9. The Argument - Marriage Story
Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story is a devastating examination of a marriage breaking down, elevated by both its savage emotional honesty and terrific performances from Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson.
By far the most memorable - and honestly, shocking - scene is a fiery confrontation between Charlie (Driver) and Nicole (Johansson), culminating in Charlie explosively shouting at Nicole, "Every day I wake up and I hope you're dead. Dead like, if I could guarantee [their son] Henry would be OK, I'd hope you'd get an illness, and get hit by a car and die."
It's a deeply raw and upsetting moment, and one expertly performed by both Driver and Johansson, perfectly crystallising the emotional brutality of divorce and what it can bring out in people.
