1997's superhero movie Spawn was a mess, albeit a glorious one that still has its apologists and shameless fans today. Despite easily doubling its budget at the box office, a sequel languished in development hell, and in more recent years talk of a Spawn remake/reboot emerged instead.

Blumhouse Productions confirmed they would be spearheading a lower-budget Spawn movie last year, with Spawn creator Todd McFarlane signed on to write and direct. Jamie Foxx is meanwhile said to be playing the titular hero.

Is It A Good Idea?

Spawn's a neat character just begging for a good movie, though it's also tough to have faith in McFarlane himself handling directorial duties given his lack of filmmaking experience.

Foxx will nail Spawn, that's for sure, and with Blumhouse taking the lead, it'll probably be a solid commercial success in the very least. Best case scenario, the new Spawn could be a refreshingly stripped-down effort that leans into its lower budget, but it really comes down to how capable McFarlane is behind the camera.

Great idea, suspect execution is the worry here.
