Hollywood loves nothing more than a Paul Verhoeven remake, what with the... uneven redos of RoboCop and Total Recall. Neither of those turkeys seems to have put them off, though, as Baywatch's Mark Swift and Damian Shannon are apparently hard at work on a screenplay for a Starship Troopers remake.

Rather than simply going shot for shot on the Verhoeven cult classic, this redo will instead go back to the source for a slightly new take. If they don't also channel Verhoeven's satirical look at fascism, militarism and immigration anxiety, they don't deserve to make it.

Is It A Good Idea?

It doesn't need to be a remake, but when you look at the quality of the direct-to-DVD sequels that followed it, you can perhaps understand why they've gone for a clean slate instead of a big screen sequel.

Personally, I'm delighted to see the brand continuing - as long as it isn't B-movie garbage with none of Verhoeven's self-awareness, it's very exciting.
