20. Back to the Future Part II

Let's kick this list off with one of the all-time greatest examples of this trope - Back to the Future.

After Marty (Michael J. Fox) returns to 1985 at the end of the first film and all seems to be well, he and his girlfriend Jennifer (Claudia Wells) are suddenly met by Doc (Christopher Lloyd), who insists that they return with him to the future in order to save their children from woeful fates.

Back to the Future Part II then continues from the very moment that the trio get in the DeLorean and fly away - well, almost.

Part II actually opens by repeating the final scene of the first film, but because actress Claudia Wells was unable to reprise her role of Jennifer in the sequel, the scene was actually reshot with new actress Elisabeth Shue, albeit done so seamlessly that many likely never noticed.

Back to the Future Part III also picked up straight after the end of Part II's cliffhanger, ensuring that the entire trilogy takes place over a period of just a couple of weeks.
