Darren Aronofsky's feature debut will be at once deeply fascinating and horrifying to mathematicians, as eccentric number theorist Max Cohen (Sean Gullette) attempts to uncover the mystery of a 216-digit number which he believes holds the key to understanding the universe. This is a terrific film about obsession in all its forms (in much the same way that Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream is relevant to all sorts of addictions), and though it immerses the viewer in rigorous mathematical detail, it never feels overwhelming or tedious. There's a hypnotic quality to Aronofsky's direction that has served him well here and on every other movie he's made, helping elevate the low-budget production and create an intense mood. Plus, it's got an ending you won't soon forget...
