12. Monkey Man

Monkey Man is the directorial debut of Dev Patel, who also stars in and co-wrote this action-thriller that's being touted as "John Wick in Mumbai."

Patel plays a man who emerges from prison and plots revenge on those who ruined his life years prior, and as conventional a setup as that sounds, Patel is such a left-field choice for the action hero role that it's difficult not to be intrigued. Sharlto Copley, Sobhita Dhulipala, and Sikandar Kher will co-star.

Netflix acquired the film for a whopping $30 million back in March 2021, and though it's seemingly been sitting on the shelf for quite a while, Patel's got as good a chance as anyone of turning in a quality genre film given the many genius directors he's worked with over the last decade-plus.

Monkey Man releases later this year.
