At this point in his career, Mark Ruffalo has become so popular both critically and amongst audiences that he can't fairly be considered underrated anymore. He's able to switch between huge blockbusters like The Avengers and smaller independent films with ease, and can pretty much take on whatever projects he wants. Being a socially conscious person who has repeatedly shown his willingness to use his fame as a platform to discuss political issues, it's exciting but not necessarily surprising to see what film he has next on the horizon. Later this year, Ruffalo will be starring in a film called Spotlight, which details the scandal that erupted around the Catholic church after the Boston Globe published an article accusing several of its priests of child molestation. It's right up his alley, and might end up garnering him some attention from the Academy.
