Just gaze at its beauty. No, not the Alien Queen, but the lighting surrounding it.

Honestly, the copious amount of extremely harsh light was probably used, in part, to conceal the puppeteers that would have been inside the Alien suit for this scene.

It's not unnecessary though. The way in which the backlighting cuts through the sharp appendages of the Queen and makes her appear even more scary is a treat for the eyes.
