One Night Only touts one of the most creative setups for any rom-com ever, taking place in a reality where premarital sex is outlawed in the U.S., save for one night a year.

It's tough not to be at least a little intrigued by "The Purge for boning," yet the big problem is that Travis Braun's script digs a little too eagerly into the how and why of the central setup.

There's a basically misguided amount of world-building on offer here, in turn encouraging the audience to interrogate the more horrifyingly dystopian implications of its premise - hardly the most alluring foundation for a sexy, charming rom-com.

The filmmakers would've likely been better off explaining less about the premarital sex restriction and focusing more on the interplay between Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner's romantically entangled protagonists.

Ironically not unlike the original Purge, it's a neat idea for a film squandered on a clumsy, slapdash script.
